Fluoride

Fluoride

One of the most important aspects of our jobs is protecting the oral health of our patients. Prevention is just as important as treatment because the fewer dental problems you have, the better the job we have been doing. That’s why Humphries Dental offers fluoride treatments, to help defend and strengthen your teeth.

What Is Fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is found in your bones. Fluoride has been shown to strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent cavities which is why it’s added in small amounts to public drinking water supplies across the United States.  This mineral is also used as part of dental therapies to improve the health of your teeth.

How Does a Fluoride Treatment Work?

When you come in for a fluoride treatment, your hygienist will provide a concentrated varnish. Oftentimes, the hygienist will apply the treatment directly onto your teeth with a small brush or similar device.

The treatment itself only takes a few minutes to complete but you’ll be asked to avoid drinking or eating for at least 30 minutes after the procedure is done. Eating before the allotted time can remove the fluoride and greatly diminish the effectiveness of the procedure.

Why Should I Ask for a Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is one of the most effective methods of giving your teeth what they need to prevent and fight tooth decay along with helping to desensitize your teeth. Fluoride is also an effective defense against the acid residue from plaque bacteria and sugar. When children start growing their permanent teeth, using fluoride helps protect the teeth and reinforce the mineralization of newly erupted teeth.
